NIX Solutions: GPT-4 Removed from Menu on April 30

Starting April 30, OpenAI will remove the GPT-4 model from the model selection menu in ChatGPT for Plus users. This is part of the final transition to the new GPT-4o model, which, according to OpenAI, outperforms GPT-4 in all key areas—from text generation to programming.

The GPT-4 model, released on March 14, 2023, was a major milestone in the evolution of ChatGPT. As a multimodal large language model, it demonstrated a significant improvement over GPT-3. PCMag reported that training GPT-4 required over $100 million, underlining the scale and ambition behind its development.

Although GPT-4 will no longer appear in the ChatGPT user interface, it will still be accessible via the API on other platforms. For free ChatGPT users, this change won’t affect functionality, as they already do not have access to manual model selection. OpenAI continues to offer various models such as GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-o3, GPT-o1, and GPT-4.5, with rumors circulating about a possible GPT-4.1 release.

A Unified Future for Model Selection

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged the confusion users may face due to the growing number of models. In response, the company plans to shift toward a unified AI system. In this new system, model selection will occur automatically, based on the nature of the task, eliminating the need for manual choices.

All current models are seen as incremental steps toward the eventual launch of GPT-5. However, its development has encountered delays, partly due to GPU shortages. Still, after securing $40 billion in investments last month, OpenAI is expected to boost its computing capabilities and accelerate progress toward GPT-5. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

GPT-5 Access and Subscription Tiers

Once GPT-5 launches, it will be accessible to users for free in a basic mode, adds NIX Solutions. ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) will benefit from enhanced AI functions, while Pro users ($200/month) will gain access to premium features. These will include voice mode, Canvas visualization tools, advanced search capabilities, deep learning functions, and other OpenAI offerings.
