Modern browsers often consume significant amounts of RAM, and Microsoft Edge is no exception. However, this situation may soon improve. Microsoft has begun testing a new feature aimed at limiting the amount of RAM allocated to the Edge browser, giving users direct control over these limits rather than relying on an obscure algorithm.
New RAM Management Option in Edge
The latest test build of Edge for Windows 11 introduces a new option called “Manage Edge RAM usage.” This feature is presented as a drop-down list, allowing users to set specific RAM usage limits. The Windows Latest portal recently shared a screenshot showcasing this new feature. On a computer with 16 GB of RAM, five settings were available:
- No limits: Edge will use all available memory if necessary.
- Minimum limit: 8 GB of RAM.
- Moderate limit: 6 GB of RAM.
- Aggressive limit: 4 GB of RAM.
- The most aggressive limit: 2 GB of RAM.
Customizable Settings for Enhanced Control
NIX Solutions adds that users can choose to apply the specified RAM limit only when starting games or on a permanent basis, depending on their preferences. This flexibility allows for a more tailored browsing experience, especially for those who need to conserve system resources.
While this feature is currently in testing, it remains unclear when it will be available in the stable version of the browser. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
